The African Forensic Science Academy (AFSA) proudly participated in the European Academy of Forensic Science conference (EAFS2025). It was held from 26-30 May 2025, in the vibrant city of Dublin, Ireland. This event, hosted by Forensic Science Ireland (FSI), marked a significant milestone for the forensic science community as it coincided with the 50th  anniversary of EAFS’s foundation and celebrated the organization’s rich legacy of advancing forensic science across Europe and beyond.

Gathering in Dublin

EAFS2025 stands as the most comprehensive European forensic science event, occurring once every three years and bringing together over 1,200 forensic science practitioners, stakeholders, and partners from across the global forensic science community. This year’s conference theme,Reflections on Forensic Science: Looking back to look forward, perfectly captured the spirit of celebration and forward-thinking that defined the event.

The significance of hosting this conference in Dublin cannot be overstated. Not only did it celebrate the 10th EAFS conference and the 50th anniversary of EAFS’s foundation, but it also marked the 30-year anniversary of the European Network of Forensic Science Institutes (ENFSI).

AFSA’s Distinguished Delegation

AFSA was represented by a delegation from both our Academy and our partner organization, the Rwanda Forensic Institute (RFI). The delegation comprised:

  • Dr Antonel OLCKERS, President of AFSA
  • Dr Charles KARANGWA, Director General of RFI
  • SP Japhet ASHIMIRWE, AFSA Board Member
  • Mr Nicodemé NZAHOYANKUYE, RFI Public Relations Representative

This collaborative representation highlighted the strong partnership between AFSA and the RFI, demonstrating our commitment to advancing forensic science across Africa through strategic partnerships and international engagement.

A Diverse Global Community

The conference attracted an impressive array of professionals representing the full spectrum of forensic science disciplines. This diversity created a significant networking environment where knowledge flowed freely across disciplinary boundaries, fostering the kind of cross-pollination of ideas that drives innovation in forensic science.

Meaningful Connections

One of the most significant outcomes of AFSA’s participation was the establishment of meaningful connections with leading figures in the global forensic science community. Our delegation had the privilege of engaging with several distinguished individuals whose work continues to shape the field. Two of the many highlights for AFSA were meeting for the first time with Prof. Ersi KALFOGLOU and Prof. Pierre Margot.

Meeting with the Balkan Academy of Forensic Sciences

A particularly fruitful encounter occurred with Professor Ersi KALFOGLOU, President of the Balkan Academy of Forensic Sciences. AFSA’s president engaged in extensive discussions about potential collaboration between our two academies, exploring opportunities for knowledge exchange, joint research initiatives, and capacity building programs. This conversation laid the groundwork for what promises to be a valuable partnership that will benefit both organizations and contribute to the advancement of forensic science across Africa and the Balkans.

The potential collaboration represents more than just an institutional partnership; it symbolizes the global nature of forensic science challenges and the need for international cooperation to address them effectively. Both academies recognized the value of sharing experiences, methodologies, and best practices that could enhance forensic capabilities in their respective regions.

Meeting a Pioneer: Professor Pierre MARGOT

Perhaps one of the most inspiring moments of the conference was the opportunity to meet Professor Pierre MARGOT (University of Lausanne), a true pioneer in forensic science. Professor MARGOT’s influence extends far beyond his own research and practice; he has mentored many of today’s leading forensic experts around the world, creating a lasting legacy that continues to shape the field.

During Monday’s workshop, Professor MARGOT delivered an inspiring presentation that took attendees on a powerful journey through the rich history of forensic science. His presentation was not merely a recounting of historical events but a masterful weaving of past discoveries, current applications, and future possibilities.

He demonstrated how understanding the historical development of forensic techniques provides crucial context for current practice and offers insights into future directions for the field.

The presentation highlighted key moments in forensic science history, from the early development of fingerprinting and anthropometry to the revolutionary impact of DNA analysis and the emerging potential of digital forensics. Professor MARGOT’s unique perspective, gained through decades of practice and observation, provided attendees with a deeper appreciation for the scientific rigor and methodological evolution that characterizes modern forensic science.

Lasting impression

Our participation in EAFS2025 exemplifies the power of international collaboration in advancing forensic science. The conference provided an invaluable platform for learning, networking, and partnership building that will benefit not only AFSA but the entire African forensic science community.

The warmth of Dublin’s welcome, the excellence of FSI’s hosting, and the collaborative spirit of the global forensic science community made EAFS2025 an exceptional experience. As we return to our work in Africa, we carry with us new knowledge, strengthened relationships, and renewed commitment to advancing forensic science in service of justice and truth.

This conference has reinforced our belief that forensic science knows no boundaries and that international collaboration is essential for addressing the complex challenges facing our field.

We extend our gratitude to the EAFS2025 organising committee, FSI, and ENFSI who made EAFS2025 a hugely successful event. In line with the conference theme we have reflected on the past during the meeting, and feel better equipped to look forward and contribute to the global forensic science community as we work together to build a more just and secure world through the application of rigorous forensic science.
