The African Forensic Sciences Academy inaugural conference (AFSA2024) kicked off in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, with a compelling blend of workshops, keynote addresses, and groundbreaking discussions that set the stage for Africa’s forensic science future. The inaugural conference began with two days of highly engaging workshops led by world-renowned forensic experts, followed by three days of insightful conference sessions. From wildlife forensics to digital forensics and forensic genetics, the topics presented addressed global challenges in the field of forensic science whilst providing a platform for both seasoned and young professionals to interact and collaborate.

With the opening cocktail on September 24th, delegates enjoyed opportunities to network before the main conference began. Rwanda’s Minister of Justice, Dr Emmanuel UGIRASHEBUJA, officially opened the event on September 25th. During his opening address, he emphasised the importance of forensic science in Africa’s legal systems and his country’s commitment to justice, stating: “Rwanda has made justice a priority, investing in quality justice for all citizens. We’re ready to collaborate and support initiatives across the continent to empower forensic institutions.” His remarks highlighted  Rwanda’s dedication to advancing forensic science and justice, as well as their readiness to foster continental collaboration in building forensic capabilities across Africa.

Attendees captured key moments in a memorable photo with the honorable Minister and the  president of AFSA, Dr Antonel OLCKERS, as well as the Rwanda Forensic Institute’s Director General, Dr Charles KARANGWA, amongst other global  leaders in the field of forensic science.

The conference featured keynote talks that covered the spectrum of forensic science, including innovative discussions on wildlife forensic science, using forensic genetics to combat terrorism, and forensic handwriting analysis under the influence of alcohol, amongst many others. Additionally, the event fostered growth for young researchers, offering a unique platform for them to present their work and connect with experienced mentors in the field of forensic science.

The week concluded with an unforgettable closing cocktail, with Chief Justice Dr Faustin NTEZIRYAYO’s powerful remarks highlighting the role of forensic science in achieving justice across Africa. In an expression of AFSA’s core values, the conference ended with Umuganda, a tree-planting ceremony symbolising growth, unity, and the enduring partnerships formed during AFSA2024. The theme of AFSA2024 was ‘Ecosystem of Forensic Science in Africa’ and with this Umuganda event, AFSA made a small contribution to the natural ecosystem of Rwanda.

Special recognition goes to our sponsors and exhibitors, including InterBusiness Co Ltd, QiaGen, Forenscope, Foster + Freeman, HAGURUKA, The Legal Aid Forum Rwanda, Papilon, and Rwanda National Commission for UNESCO, whose support made this landmark event possible.

AFSA2024 left a lasting impact, planting the seeds of growth and innovation in forensic science across Africa. Stay tuned for the promising collaborations and developments that will undoubtedly emerge from this remarkable gathering – a  historic event that, in a sense, launched Africa onto the global forensic science stage.
